Cooking Instructions

The protein cooking time listed in this recipe has been updated.

As of December 2025, we’ve revised cooking times for all our proteins to reflect improved food safety guidance.

Check out the latest recommended times in our Cooking Guidelines.

Before you start

  • 1x saucepan
  • 1x non-stick frying pan
  • Medium mixing bowl

Boil the rice

  • Cook the rice in boiling water for 10-12 mins, then drain.

Sear your steaks

  • Meanwhile, in a small bowl, stir together the paprika & oregano blend, cumin and half the garlic paste to make a spice paste.
  • On a clean board, trim any visible fat from the steaks, then lightly season. Spritz a large non-stick frying pan with cooking spray and put it over a high heat. Cook the steaks for 3-4 mins on each side for medium (or 5-6 mins for well done).
  • Add the spice paste and cook for 1 minute, turning the steaks to coat. Leave to rest, then thinly slice against the grain.

Salad ingredients, assemble!

  • At the same time, trim the lettuces and thinly slice. Coarsely grate the carrots, then quarter the tomatoes. Finely dice the jalapeños. Core and trim the cabbage, then thinly slice. Halve the lemon.
  • Combine the salad ingredients in a mixing bowl, then squeeze in the juice from half the lemon (to taste). Cut the remaining lemon into wedges.

Finish & serve

  • Add 100ml water (200ml for 4 portions) to the steak pan, bring to a boil and simmer for 3-4 mins, until reduced slightly to make a thin pan gravy.
  • In a small bowl, mix together the yogurt and the remaining garlic paste.
  • Plate up the rice, salad and steak. Spoon the pan gravy over the rice, drizzle everything with the garlic yogurt and serve with the lemon wedges.
